Overview

Spaning to an approximate of 4,092 square kilometres (1,580 square miles) of pristine wilderness. It is situated adjacent to Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools Reserve, creating a giant expanse of protected wilderness, and boasts breathtaking vistas of the Zambezi River, as well as lush riverine surrounds.

It is not uncommon to see enormous herds of elephant along the riverbanks, as well as leopard, buffalo and lion. Unlike the Luangwa, the Zambezi is navigable year-round and because of the diversity of animals, the opportunities to get close to game wandering in and out of the Zambezi channels are spectacular.

The river’s edge is overhung with a thick riverine fringe, including ebony and fig trees. Further inland is a floodplain fringed with mopane forest and interspersed with interthorn trees and huge acacias. The rolling hills, which form the backdrop to the park, are covered in broadleaf woodland.

Why specially visit Lower Zambezi National Park. In summer the stunning narina trogon makes its home here. Other specialities are the trumpeter hornbill, Meyers parrot and Lilian’s lovebird.
